DIMENSION X Dimension X was first heard on NBC April 8, 1950, and ran until September 29, 1951. Strange that so little good science fiction came out of radio; they seem ideally compatible, both relying heavily on imagination. Some fine isolated science fiction stories were developed on the great anthology shows, Suspense and Escape . But until the premiere of Dimension X -- a full two decades after network radio was established -- there were no major science fiction series of broad appeal to...

THEATER FIVE Theater Five was ABC's attempt to revive radio drama during the early 1960s. The series name was derived from its time slot, 5:00 PM. Running Monday through Friday, it was an anthology of short stories, each about 20 minutes long. News programs and commercials filled out the full 30 minutes. There was a good bit of science fiction and some of the plots seem to have been taken from the daily newspaper. Fred Foy, of The Lone Ranger fame, was an ABC staff announcer in the early 60s,...

X MINUS ONE X Minus One aired on NBC from 24 April 55 until 9 January 58 for a total of 124 episodes with one pilot or audition story. There was a revival of the series in 1973 when radio was attempting to bring back radio drama and it lasted until 1975. The show occupied numerous time slots through out its run in the 50's and thus was never able to generate a large following. X Minus One was an extension of Dimension X which aired on NBC from 1950-51. The first fifteen scripts used for X Minus...

My two favorite episodes are "S.O.S" and "Death is the Judge."

THE MYSTERIOUS TRAVELER The Mysterious Traveler ran on Mutual from December 1943 until about September of 1952. This tremendously popular radio show was truly an all around favorite for any mystery lover of the time. It was the brainchild and magnum opus of golden age writing greats Robert Arthur and David Kogan. During its magnificent run, it was nominated for the coveted Edgar award for "Best Radio Drama" in 1949, 1951 and finally garnered a hands down win in 1953. The only show to...

THE SIX SHOOTER The Six Shooter brought James Stewart to the NBC microphone on September 20, 1953, in a fine series of folksy Western adventures. Stewart was never better on the air than in this drama of Britt Ponset, frontier drifter created by Frank Burt. The epigraph set it up nicely: "The man in the saddle is angular and long-legged: his skin is sun dyed brown. The gun in his holster is gray steel and rainbow mother-of-pearl. People call them both The Six Shooter." Ponset was a...

I've been looking for this show for years. Very happy to finally get a chance to hear it.

In April 2000, NPR, in partnership with the Hollywood Theater of the Ear, launches the most ambitious radio drama since Star Wars. 2000X unites the best futuristic fiction with superb acting talents and top-notch sound production. These audio plays celebrate the new millennium, looking to the future for adventure, satire, suspense, philosophy, comedy, and, of course, romance.

ESCAPE In the Golden Days of Radio, back in the 1930s to the 1950s, most popular radio series had a set time for going out each week. Occasionally, there might be a change in the schedule, but on the whole a consistent time-slot was something that helped build a large audience and so was something the big networks aimed to achieve. One exception to this rule was the dramatic adventure anthology series called Escape , whose time-slot shifted an incredible eighteen times in its seven-year run...

"The Man Who Talked With Death" is my favorite. Thanks for sharing!

The Strange Dr. Weird is a radio program broadcast on Mutual from 1944 to 1945. Sponsored by Adams Hats, the drama is notable in part because it was a sister series to The Mysterious Traveler, both in theme and its narrator. Maurice Tarplin, who was also the creepy voice of The Mysterious Traveler. Many of the scripts were condensed 15-minute versions of scripts originally broadcast on The Mysterious Traveler. To the accompaniment of an organ's spooky strains, Tarplin introduced each episode:...
